Friday, September 2nd, 2005 by Administrator Barnhard Blog

The Dutch media and experts are blaming local authorities and the Bush administration for the huge damage that is done. It seems that funding the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq coursed cuts in funding in protecting Americans at home.

Media and Weblogs (2)

Saturday, September 10th, 2005 by Administrator Barnhard Blog

breakingnews

We mentioned before that claims as held by some media, that internet is providing information similar to regular media, were simply not true.

Well here is another sign:

Wikipedia is fast becoming the number-one online resource for web surfers hungry for context about breaking news, in what must be a sad comment on the ability for traditional news media to keep its audiences well-informed.

theregister.co.uk

Moreover, even CNN (with half its staff working on the online section) and famous for its news coverage for breaking news events, recognizes that.

Do not cheat in China !

Sunday, September 11th, 2005 by Administrator Barnhard Blog

Chinese students who are being caught cheating on their test or final exam will be brought to court.

China recently introduced a new law which makes cheating during a final exam a crime. Although no maximum penalty has been set, it will probably be pretty effective against cheaters.

New Orleans dog massacre

Sunday, September 11th, 2005 by Administrator Barnhard Blog

As you’ve probably noticed Barnhard Blog is not paying much attention to Katrina’s aftermath. Nor do I raise a New Orleans discussion during conversations with my American friends. The chaos the hurricane and officials caused in New Orleans is just too indescribable and shameful.

In fact I just try to distance myself from the “Who is to blame” discussion. I hope that as soon as the city and the World are beginning to recover from the first shock, an overview of what has caused this chaos and why it continuous will become more clearly. Let’s deal with the finger pointing later. I guess it does not really help the traumatized victims now.

Unfortunately the above mentioned desire to distance myself fails. Especially when confronted with stories and discussions on Dutch weblogs with links to American media and video footage. One example is the New Orleans dog massacre.

St. Bernard Parish is home to an unknown number of dogs left behind during the exodus from Katrina. With their owners missing, the animals fend for themselves.

While the National Guard is trying to feed the dogs so they stay alive, three blocks away the sheriff is killing as much of them as possible because he thinks nobody is helping / feeding them.

This way the objectivity of all her activities will be guaranteed. So Communism is not good nor bad.

Brain Building DNA

Thursday, September 15th, 2005 by Administrator Barnhard Blog

brain

With the intelligent design nonsense discussion going on, some good news. Maybe they need some more ASPM ?

The size and complexity of the human brain sets us apart from other creatures. Now results published in the current issue of the journal Science suggest that the evolution of our gray matter is ongoing.

The research, led by Bruce T. Lahn of the University of Chicago, focused on two genes called microcephalin and ASPM
[...] They found that for both genes, one variant occurred much more frequently than would be expected by chance, suggesting that natural selection is at work. The microcephalin variant arose about 37,000 years ago; the ASPM one just 5,800 years ago, the team reports.

Space Lift Approval

spacelift

Although there are many conceptual doubts, not the least engineering, the American FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) has allowed airspace tests for the LiftPort Group. The LiftPort Group aims to make “the space lift” reality before 12th April 2018.

Because space-stations need transport lifts as well they receive now more backing. Got to love that Space Lift target though.
Previous entry about the space lift is here.

Update: Can’t wait? Bring you own custom build satelite in orbit for 40,000 dollar, no millions required.
Update2: Date 2018 seems also deadline for landing 4 men on the moon.
Update3: First Critics about insane costs have already stood up in the New Scientist.

Introduction

In the 16th and 17th century, Wunderkammern or so called chambers of curiosities were special rooms that collected curiosities of all nature. The Wunderkammer was non-scientific. Besides a form of entertainment was the Wunderkammer above all an attempt by the owner to reflect his world-view into a theater of curiosities (Newhouse, 1998; Parnell, 2004).

An interesting new search-engine for businesses has launched recently. Better than the Gouden Gids (other dutch search engine) this search engine provides like a website around a 1000 words, pictures and video as well. Number of businesses covered: 800,000. Number of languages available to search with: 4. Information mostly as bought from the chamber of commerce. To top it off, it also includes a buttom which, when pressed, will make the company call you back. Ideal!

Tijs Teulings - Kidnapped Blog

Tuesday, September 27th, 2005 by Administrator Barnhard Blog

Tijs.org was kipnapped for a while, amazing story and a great lesson in how you should register your domain.

In a tale of distress, misery and miscommunication this very site was kidnapped, ransomed and mistreated before being heroically rescued and put back online again.

The morale of this story is of course never to register your domain name with the same people who host it. And to make sure that your domain name is registered in your own name not some born again christian cokeheads at some hosting provider somewhere in texas. If the last would also have been the case i would have never gotten my domain name back.
