Search Engine Ranking Factors

Search Engines

This article contains a large list of the factors that can influence a web document’s rank at the major search engines (Yahoo!, MSN, Google & AskJeeves) for a particular term or phrase. Although it is impossible to say for certain which of these items affects which search engine or how important the factors are individually, I’ve created an estimated ranking importance scale as indicated by the following symbols (based on my personal opinions).

Rupert Murdoch

…However, his empire is beginning to show cracks. The cracks are not only related to the internal changes within the family business, but that dynamic will most certainly hasten the process, especially once Rupert is out of the picture….

Today I recieved my monthly newsletter from www.budde.com.au. In it was the interesting article “The demise of News Corp” from Paul Budde.

No.1 flash site 2005 ?

Absolut Metropolis

Absolutmetropolis.com

ABSOLUT METROPOLIS features 11 eye-catching characters selected by ABSOLUT to interpret the ABSOLUT brand and be photographed by the internationally renowned photographer Nadav Kander.

Truly an amazing flash website, only the music is irritating after a while (it loops). Is it good enough for the title no.1 flash site? Sadly I am not aware of such a competition.

iPods, mobile phones and community

Wednesday, October 12th, 2005 by Vincent Barnhard

IpodBarry Wellman Net Lab Director of the Centre for Urban & Community Studies of the University of Toronto was interviewed for a thoughtful long feature of Kenneth Kidd in Sunday’s Toronto Star about how iPods and mobile phones are affecting public/private boundaries of community.

So the whole notion of a strong, controlling neighbourhood community “has factually not been true” since at least the 1960s. What has replaced it — with the accelerating help of cellphones — is what Wellman calls “networked individualism.”

“The big change has been this shift from groups to networks,” he says. “They’re less formally structured, they’re more amorphous.”

Those in anyone’s network don’t have to be physically close, just a cell call away, and it’s easier to opt in or opt out of a network than it is a group

Who needs Blocky?

Sunday, October 16th, 2005 by Administrator Barnhard Blog

blockyYou’re an real asshole, your sort of closes friend is Blocky and you are feeling yourself outside pretty much any social group..

Nonesense, you will still have more friends than anyone else !

The next step was to simply instruct the Web browser to load a MySpace URL that would automatically invite Samy as a friend, and later add him as a “hero” to the visitor’s own profile page. To do this without a user’s knowledge, the code utilized XMLHTTPRequest - a JavaScript object used in AJAX, or Web 2.0, applications

Parkeerbeleid is melkkoe voor gemeenten

Thursday, October 20th, 2005 by Vincent Barnhard

It would be astonishing if it didn’t concern itself with the question of software patents in Europe as well. Although the European Parliament recently rejected the proposed directive on computer implemented inventions, anti-patent campaigners say it is unlikely that is the end of the story.

I lost my trust in Google rankings

Friday, October 21st, 2005 by Vincent Barnhard

rankingOur website has a lower ranking than before when searching on Barnhard with Google. We used to be on the no.1 position recently we are on page 5.

I was very irritated and amazed (after visiting all the higher ranked sites) that mostly ‘barnhard’ Ill relevant search results were above this site. Maybe it is the huge amount of comment spammers and Webstat spambots that used to visit barnhard.nl or the measures I took to keep them out (WP Bad Behavior and Spam Karma and password protection on webstat). Maybe Google ranked it as a weblog (Wordpress not Blogger) and therefore ranked it lower than 1982 styled html website’s.

I quess the most likely reason is that the extension barnhard.nl or name barnhard has been used by a spammer, Google (e.g. Googlebots) noticed and took action. I want to stress that we do not sent spam! Please if you are able to hit and hurt the spammers who used our domain name, you have our blessing.

What irritates me the most about the recent ranking is the fact that I do not trust Google anymore for giving me the best results.

Interesting insight about rankings and relevance:

Update: Please read the comments, maybe I made some false judgments
