            Belgium Government goes Open

opensourceThe Belgian government’s decision to use only open formats for exchanging documents is pure common sense. The whole reason for having standards bodies and the standards they produce is to guarantee compatibility and stability above individual companies’ commercial concerns.

Millions of Euros of taxpayers’ money is spent funding bodies like ISO, so it would be foolish to then ignore the work they do.

I must have missed that, but now the rest of the EU? (dutch article)

Update: “Keep Open Source in Europe” opinion article.

Update 2: Groningen (one of 12 province capital cities of the Netherlands) turned to Open Source.

The destruction of Beijing’s “hutongs” in advance of the 2008 Olympics has many consequences for China’s cultural heritage.

                Bangkok Skytrain and Metro

                Bangkok Metro

I posted a nice Bangkok Talk interview with the Public Relations Chief of the Bangkok Metro Public Company Limited. In short the Bangkok Metro company (BMCL). It would not be nice to post a short video of the Bangkok Skytrain (BTS) somewhere in the upcomming weeks on www.bangkoktalk.nl or www.bangkoktalk.tv. Although the video is pretty retro for the true Thai fanatic it remains one of the best amateur video’s of Bangkok out there.

                  Train station behavior

ns perron train arrivalIn Japan at many stations people can line up at marked places and the train stops with the doors exactly at those places. Efficient and no fuss.

Many European countries don’t have such a mechanism, instead people start walking with all their stuff when the train arrives. As if they “just” discover that the train stops further. A gamble every time.

Great little essay research (pdf & dutch) material!

Conclusion so far is “more research” and “getting first at the door ideas”..
