Event Calendar standard in Wordpress 2.2 ?

agenda

Wouldn’t it be nice if you and your readers had the option of placing events in a shared Wordpress calendar? Let say you have a political or music blog and you’re writing about meetings or concerts. You might want to add a date to your agenda. These events would then be added to a Event Calender page on your Wordpress webblog with the date, time and a link to the post.

Please support my idea @
Wordpress.org - Event Calendar standard in Admin and Post section

Diebold Shows How to Make Your Own Voting Machine Key

Following the claims that there’s no real problems with e-voting machines, almost immediately followed by reports of massive fraud with e-voting machines in Brazil, Alex Halderman is pointing out that Diebold, in their infinite wisdom, are making it ridiculously easy to break into their machines. Halderman was a part of the team that showed that Diebold’s locks on their e-voting machines used a default key that was common to many hotel minibars and could be found easily in many places.
(…)
The company, that has continually played down reports of security flaws is apparently selling the very key you need to break into their boxes on their online site… with a picture of the key. [Techdirt]

The result:
Someone told Diebold he knew now how to do it. No response.
Then he wrote a post about it and a video.

Lost Civilizations - Byzantium

Byzantium was arguably the only stable state in Europe during the Middle Ages. Its expert military and diplomatic power ensured that Western Europe remained safe from many of the more devastating invasions from the east, at a time when the Western Christian kingdoms might have had difficulty containing them

Moreover, while Rome fell, Byzantium conquered it back (536) and carried the roman culture further. Actually Rome to some was much more mirrored to cities as Constantinople and Alexandria then the popular idea that Rome was the source (without discrediting the power Rome had off course).

More info in podcast form here and off course the wiki has more.

Dutch Web 2.0 Awards

With close to 50,000 unique votes (which for Dutch online elections is quite a lot) the previous mentioned Dutch Web 2.0 awards have been handed out. The first Dutch web awards for the next wave of webservices and tools, aka web 2.0: Web 2.0 awards.
The presentation was done in a very cozy and beautiful room. Even a mac on the toilet! I enjoyed the event, congratulate the winners and are looking forward to next years event. More photos and reviews here and here.

From what I have understood likely next time the awards will be held in December. However it doesn’t affect the nice alignment (exactly a half year) with the next web congress, the other large Dutch web 2.0. event.

Stupid in America - Let’s compare it to Belgium

20-20 investigation by John Stossel entitled “Stupid in America” highlighting some of the flaws with the education system in the United States.

The story started out when identical tests were given to high school students in New Jersey and in Belgium. The Belgian kids cleaned the American kids’ clocks. The Belgian kids called the American students “stupid”, which gave the piece its name.

Jay Greene, author of “Education Myths,” points out that “If money were the solution, the problem would already be solved … We’ve doubled per pupil spending, adjusting for inflation, over the last 30 years, and yet schools aren’t better.”

Haven’t had enough? watch this, LOL
For your kids sake revolt America.

Ignore it and they will buy crap like this or this, OLO
Or flunk at work :-) [whole story]

The Nebra sky disk

skydiskAnother great history documentary, regarding the earliest European Civilisations. While popular belief have it that Bronze Age Europeans did not have high knowledge of the stars (mostly seen as a sign of higher development). Now in 2001 this perception has changed with one authentic star disk. For the complete discovery and significance watch the BBC Horizon documentary here, (50 min), or watch it below.
