America has co-signed a deal with North Korea under which Pyongyang will abandon its nuclear weapons programme in exchange for aid. Kim Jong-il has agreed to shut down the plutonium-producing Yongbyon reactor within 60 days in return for 50,000 tonnes of heavy oil. Seems cheap at the price.
It is the sheer stupidity of White House foreign policy that is so breathtaking. That it can be negotiating with dictators on one side of the world, and bombing democracies on the other. It can strike deals on WMD with one end of the axis of evil, but not the other. Just like the invasion of Iraq, in pursuit of WMD that weren’t there, America has shown in the Middle East all the diplomatic intelligence and tactical sophistication of a ram-raider. It’s Asbo time.
