Pole Dispute Polarises

aThe year 2007 and 2008 apparently is the international polar year.

How do we know? Well, Russia is giving a show this thursday in favour of their bid for the north pole and large sections of the north pole sphere. If they win it, especially since oil has been found there, is questionable.
Danmark failed before.

A hundred year ago claimed,
both poles still disputed

The Raw Flaw

raw photo

Since 2002, digital cameras have outsold film cameras. While the advantages of digital camera’s are well known, few are aware of the lurking problem of digital photography. The control and options that film negatives offered are in trouble with its digital equivalent, RAW files.

A RAW file is a file format created by a manufacturer to contain the (actual) raw data from a digital camera. Currently each manufacturer’s format is proprietary, different and typically has multiple variations for different camera models. While RAW file use is increasing, the problems created by their closed, proprietary format are becoming more and more evident.

Slashdot goes Digg way

vote

Slashdot has finally decided it must have a user-generated voting system as Digg too: Firehose (don’t think “Fire…fox”).
Meanwhile I wonder too if this is going to effect Slashdot comments style with that. Popularity contests do attract popularity crowds.. Similarly are the top stories now going to be really the same too between Slashdot and Digg. I hope not.

On a sidenote, if you thought such “reputation” system wasn’t available for sites as Wikipedia, think again .
Remember the trouble we had with wikipedia previously.

Wordpress: Why Turkey is not ready for EU

We know it’s already happened in China, the government banned surfers from getting to wordpress.com (along with many other sites), and now, according to Doctus a judge in Turkey has decided that wordpress.com should be blocked there too. Source: cornell.wordpress.com

turkeyI’ve always seen Turkey as part of Europe and considering the role of Turkey in European history I’m convinced that they will join some day. But please after a decade or two.

Every month there seems to be some disturbing news. This week it was the news flash that Turkey is blocking Wordpress.com. Why? Well because of just a few weblogs under the domain were a bit to critical towards Adnan Oktar, a fervent advocate of creationism and that was considered as slander.

First it seemed just a mistake that they blocked Wordpress.org and not the sub-domains, which would of course also be incorrect as can be. Sadly later it turned out that Turkey is really blocking Wordpress.com. Well Turkey that’s places you next to a giant un-democratic socialist state in the east! In short you master the craft of censorship well old friend: No seats for you in the EU parliament!
