Thelonious – WP 3.0 – is out
As we announced earlier, WordPress 3.0 is now finally here. Like the WP team explains; with major features as multi-blogging, a new default theme, improved help and customization of menu’s, a feature rich update!
The WP core team is focusing the coming 3 months on the organization of the WP platform. A wise choice. WP user and developer growth needs proper allocation in resources and the platform. There are now many places of development, but not all are ready if more people join. At the same time, its growth means competition with new players?
The timing also seems right. Technically a couple of parts of WP need maturing before they are ready for core adoption. I think of the leftovers of WP MU (very few), mobile plugin support and third party support (dreamweaver, photoshop cs and many others).
Also many of the “for core” proposed ideas seem to me still plugin material. With more new users I will expect the rise of bundling of plugins (“best of” bundles). Saving starting users from a heavy WP (its still 800kb!), but catering users who want quickly much extra without reading anything.
There are a couple of minor items where the core team could work on though; A better media base organisation, better offline activity support and non-refresh commenting support. I got little (core related) inspiration from the latest drupal or joomla releases, but tips are welkom.
In all a good update and good plan ahead.
