Oil spill tackled at all?

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Louisiana fishermen, thrown out of work by the massive oil spill that has closed coastal waters, are jockeying for jobs to contain the mess. But just who gets those jobs is a source of mounting tension. Some workers are getting paid to go out on the water multiple days in a row, while others aren’t allowed to go out at all, according to some fishermen.

It still quite huge. Wikipedia is updated too. Meanwhile, go swimming in those healthy oil spilled beaches!

SWIFT bank database Still handed over to US

The European Parliament has adopted the so-called SWIFT agreement on 8 July 2010 allowing sharing EU citizens’ bank data with the US authorities, but failing to stick to its initial position on privacy safeguards from February 2010. (..) However, even the data protection European bodies – EDPS and the Article 29 Working Party – have underlined that the current agreement does not meet the European privacy standards. (..) There have been reports that the US Treasury has received up to 25% of all SWIFT transactions, which number in the billions each year. (via)

Seems that the EP still cannot guard basic privacy rights for EU citizens.
5 Years more of lack of civil rights as financial privacy. This adds to the believe that the EU is still toothless and doesn’t fend with the power, it really should have!

Office workers: Excercise is not enough

                    exercize

What was unexpected was that many of the men who sat long hours and developed heart problems also exercised. Quite a few of them said they did so regularly and led active lifestyles. The men worked out, then sat in cars and in front of televisions for hours, and their risk of heart disease soared, despite the exercise. Their workouts did not counteract the ill effects of sitting.
Most of us have heard that sitting is unhealthy. But many of us also have discounted the warnings, since we spend our lunch hours conscientiously visiting the gym.

Elif Shafak: The politics of fiction

Listening to stories widens the imagination; telling them lets us leap over cultural walls, embrace different experiences, feel what others feel. Elif Shafak builds on this simple idea to argue that fiction can overcome identity politics. I feel (without walls) therefore i’m free.

Primary School teacher: 2+3 NOT 5

                                wtf

While higher education is discussed, let’s turn shortly to the status of the basics.

Above the example of Arduenn, who’s child is wrongly corrected in maths. I find it unbelievable that teachers who cannot even count with their fingers are allowed in class. According to this Elsevier-article of 2006 the level of PABO-students is not all that good: PABO-students from mbo are really bad: Almost 3/4 of them, doesn’t even reach the level of a smart 12-year old student.
                                SHAME!

If education at that age is that bad, no wonder that students score badly later.
