        The Last Ring-bearer

tolkienLOTR, now finally written from the other side.

“It’s been said that history is written by the winners but Laura Miller writes in Salon about a counterexample as she reviews a new version of Lord of the Rings. The Last Ring-bearer was published to acclaim in Russia by Kirill Yeskov, a paleontologist whose job is reconstructing long-extinct organisms and their way of life. Yeskov performs essentially the same feat in his book. The Last Ring-bearer is set during and after the end of the War of the Ring and told from the perspective of the losers. In Yeskov’s retelling, available in translation as a free download, the wizard Gandalf is a war-monger intent on crushing the scientific and technological initiative of Mordor and its southern allies because science ‘destroys the harmony of the world and dries up the souls of men’ and Aragorn is depicted by Yeskov as a ruthless Machiavellian schemer who is ultimately the puppet of his wife, the elf Arwen. Sauron’s citadel Barad-dur is, by contrast, described as ‘that amazing city of alchemists and poets, mechanics and astronomers, philosophers and physicians, the heart of the only civilization in Middle-earth to bet on rational knowledge and bravely pitch its barely adolescent technology against ancient magic.’”

TED 2011: Wael Ghonim – Voice of Egypt’s Revolution

When the revolution that began in Tunisia spilled into Egypt, Ghonim anonymously posted a note to the Facebook page calling on Egyptians to make January 25th a day of protest. “Jan. 25″ quickly became the Twitter hashtag of the revolution. But the protests didn’t end that day; they continued the next day, and the next.

Change we can feel betrayed in: Obama & Guantanamo

                      obama deception

President Obama signed an executive order Monday that will create a formal system of indefinite detention for those held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, who continue to pose a significant threat to national security. The administration also said it will start new military commission trials for detainees there.
The announcements, coming more than two years after Obama vowed in another executive order to close the detention center, all but cements Guantanamo Bay’s continuing role in U.S. counterterrorism policy
                      .

Obama change is getting better and better. We won’t say the health care bill job was bad, but this is reversal needs a lot of explaining!

Look at the record, says Chomsky: Obama is in many cases worse than George Bush and Tony Blair — on Afghanistan, Pakistan, Israel, Egypt — and would be indicted for war crimes if the Nuremburg principles were applied.

All will be aware of the ‘Europe’ that is a less than homogenous conglomerate of nation states, with an unwieldy Brussels bureaucracy at its centre. This European Union, which consists of 27 member states, is merely the most visible of several European unions, all committed to different versions of the same goal: European integration.

A nice example how power of a shopkeeper goes over the will of the city inhabitants. More importantly, city counsil shows amazing disrespect for its role to listen to what the citizens want. Shops you can get anywhere, especially if they are already there.. why kill your city space and little green for it?
