State of Word 2011

This has been an exciting year for WordPress. We’ve grown to power 14.7% of the top million websites in the world, up from 8.5%, and the latest data show 22 out of every 100 new active domains in the US are running WordPress. We also conducted our first ever user and developer survey. We found a few interesting tidbits from the survey responses already, including that 6,800 self-employed respondents were responsible for over 170,000 sites personally, and charged a median hourly rate of $50. In tough economic times, it’s heartening to see Open Source creating so many jobs. There has never been a better time to be part of the WordPress community, and I want to thank each and every one of you for making it such a wonderful place to be. Now it’s time to get back to work, there’s still 85.3% of the web that needs help. (matt)

Keen is back – Less Technology, can be more

Back in 2009 Andrew Keen seemed to have lost the argument on his vision that web 2.0/3.0 treats people as products and returns the quality of the dialogue to a lower (amateur) standard. However when Keens arguments are placed within an emotional context by Sherry Turkle it is a different ball game. Turkle, clinical psychologist, with “Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less From Each Other (2011)”, hits home hard why robots/internet and human values ARE different things and should know their place. While at first examples seem common sense, exactly why the trend isn’t following that common sense, is giving food for thought. With Privacy for example, it is very easy to fully agree with her.(via)

Would the new iPhone 5 form factor increase Apple’s market share in the US prison system?

According to a Folsom Prison guard, the iPhone is not a very popular cellphone among convicts. It’s hard to smuggle it inside the prison because “they take too much… real state.”

Moron EU politicians vote for copyright extention

“The copyright on sound recordings by the Beatles, Rolling Stones and other famous bands was due to expire in the next few years. However, the EU Council has now scuttled any such hopes. The copyright term has been extended from 50 to 70 years with life-supported rockers expressing their delight.”

Ergo: Yes, we must redouble our efforts to incentivise John Lennon to produce more new music! (via)

It is good to read that at least Holland, Belgium and a little few other countries voted AGAINST this extension. Unfortunately too many other moron politicians (most likely nicely paid by some lobbyists) haven’t studied “public good & intellectual property 101” enough.

Wallace & Gromit’s World of Invention Episode 1 Preview – BBC One

Kinetic sculptor and artist Theo Jansen builds ‘strandbeests’ from yellow plastic tubing that is readily available in his native Holland.

The graceful creatures evolve over time as Theo adapts their designs to harness the wind more efficiently. They are powered only by the wind and even store some of the wind’s energy in plastic bottle ‘stomachs’ to be used when there is no wind.

                                    Salarissen Goede Doelen Directie Openbaar

Goede ontwikkeling.

                                      Bankieren is menselijk

                                                  The Dr. Fox Lecture

In 1970 three American researchers, John E. Ware, Donald H. Naftulin and Frank A. Donnelly, designed an experiment to find out whether a brilliant delivery technique of a talk could so completely bamboozle a group of experts that they overlooked the fact that the content was nonsense. The result was the hilarious Dr Fox Lecture and the answer was: yes! The experts didn’t notice a thing.(via)
