    flashcrash wannebe?

U.S. stock markets were struck Wednesday by the latest in a series of technical problems that have undermined investor confidence, as high order volume triggered unusual price swings in about 150 stocks.
Knight Capital Group Inc., one of the market’s largest brokerages, said it was probing software problems and told clients to send their orders to other firms as a wave of orders shook the market and prompted exchanges to halt trading in some securities.
With some securities seen changing hands at 20 times their normal rate, the problems drew scrutiny from regulators already examining whether some other high-profile stock-market …(wsj)

Mars footage, agains copyrights screw things up

                  k

Lon Seidman knew he wasn’t going to get rich from his three-hour video discussion of the Curiosity rover landing on Mars. The local media entrepreneur did a live Google+ Hangout about the event and posted the resulting video to YouTube, expecting it would earn him a few bucks and attract some new readers to his site, CT Tech Junkie. During the discussion, Seidman played a number of NASA videos about the Curiosity mission. He knew he was on safe ground because works of the federal government are automatically in the public domain.
So he was surprised to find that no fewer than five other media organizations (mostly television stations, including some from overseas) had “claimed” the content of his video through YouTube’s Content ID system.(more)

Big data is our generation’s civil rights issue

Data doesn’t invade people’s lives. Lack of control over how it’s used does.
What’s really driving so-called big data isn’t the volume of information. It turns out big data doesn’t have to be all that big. Rather, it’s about a reconsideration of the fundamental economics of analyzing data.
For decades, there’s been a fundamental tension between three attributes of databases. You can have the data fast; you can have it big; or you can have it varied. The catch is, you can’t have all three at once.

He shows a currently b built network map of diseases to find this out. He sees a big opportunity for the medical world to solve diseases if they would take more steps in this area. Slender – maybe too scary?

                                      Insurance new low: Defending killers

If you are insured by Progressive, and they owe you money, they will defend your killer in court in order to not pay you your policy.
The trial was a real shitshow for my parents, and I did not love it either. As it happens, the jury did find that the other driver was negligent, which, if justice or decency are priorities for Progressive, will result in them finally honoring Katie’s policy. At this point, I hope you’ll forgive me if I wait for it to actually happen.(more)

The home of golf’s Masters championship, which has faced increasing criticism because of its all-male membership, invited former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore to become the first women in green jackets when the club opens for a new season in October. Both women accepted (more)

For the why, there are plenty of theories..

Augusta National, which opened in December 1932 and did not have a black member until 1990, The club has a long tradition of not revealing its members. It also traditionally offered memberships to the chief executive of IBM, a sponsor of the Masters. After Virginia Rometty became IBM’s CEO in January, Augusta leaders found themselves in an awkward spot. In April, when Payne was peppered with media questions about the issue, he refused to answer, saying he would not publicly discuss membership issues. The club is believed to have a membership of about 300. So women now make up .6 percent of the total.

NYPD: Muslim spying led to no leads, terror cases

                                                nypd

In more than six years of spying on Muslim neighborhoods, eavesdropping on conversations and cataloguing mosques, the New York Police Department’s secret Demographics Unit never generated a lead or triggered a terrorism investigation, the department acknowledged in court testimony unsealed late Monday.

The NYPD is the largest police department in the nation and Mayor Michael Bloomberg has held up its counterterrorism tactics as a model for the rest of the country. After The Associated Press began reporting on those tactics last year, supporters argued that the Demographics Unit was central to keeping the city safe. Galati testified that it was an important tool, but conceded it had not generated any leads.

Galati testified as part of a lawsuit that began in 1971 over NYPD spying on students, civil rights groups and suspected Communist sympathizers during the 1950s and 1960s. The lawsuit, known as the Handschu case, resulted in federal guidelines that prohibit the NYPD from collecting information about political speech unless it is related to potential terrorism.

Civil rights lawyers believe the Demographics Unit violated those rules. Documents obtained by the AP show the unit conducted operations outside its jurisdiction, including in New Jersey. The FBI there said those operations damaged its partnerships with Muslims and jeopardized national security.
