Stuxnet’s Secret Twin
The real program to sabotage Iran’s nuclear facilities was far more sophisticated than anyone realized. In 2007, an unidentified person submitted a sample of code to the computer security site VirusTotal. It later turned out to be the first variant of Stuxnet — at least, the first one that we’re aware of. But that was only realized five years later, with the knowledge of the second Stuxnet variant. Without that later and much simpler version, the original Stuxnet might still today sleep in the archives of anti-virus researchers, unidentified as one of the most aggressive cyberweapons in history.
