Elsevier free academic papers now finally free?
I do think Elsevier can charge for services, but not for rights. There’s the difference.
Elsevier was told two years ago that there was a problem with the way it presented open access articles, since the impression was given — for whatever reason — that you had to pay for things that were actually freely available. Even under the most generous interpretation, it is simply not acceptable for a multi-billion dollar publishing company to ignore this problem for so long. [techdirt]
The publisher realises its really unneeded bad press and has now reported it will fix this. I’m actually surprised that the firm has acted so slow:
Its business model is actually under serious threat for the academic community who realizes that locking up papers with patents and copyrights isn’t serving society.
