R.I.P. Guru Josh
The musician Guru Josh (Paul Walden), who had his biggest hit with Infinity in 1990 as rave culture swept Britain, has died aged 51 in Ibiza on Monday. He commited suicide. Born in Jersey, Walden studied dentistry, then had a spell in the US before moving to London in the late 1980s, where he worked as a booking agent and played pub gigs with his band, Joshua Cries Wolf. at one show an audience member gave him an ecstasy pill, which changed his outlook on life. In response, Walden decided to explore the burgeoning rave scene, then reinvented himself as Guru Josh, making house music with his band’s saxophone player, known as Mad Mick. “I’m more like a mad inventor than a musician. About a year ago, I patented a new invention that’s being manufactured in China at the moment. It’s a big secret but you’ll know about it soon. People say it’s the next cat’s eyes.”
Addicted to stuff, but an icon of the 90s.
