          Roomware

          ROOMWARE

RoomWare is a software application running in a defined space. The people in a RoomWare enabled space can use the services running on a local server through their mobile phone (Bluetooth), laptop (Wifi) or other means (RFID). Possible services range from live interaction with the music or video screens to introducing parts of an online profile into the local space.

This project is aimed at providing developers, artists and other interested parties with a plug and play server installation that they can use to jumpstart the development of their room based mobile installations.

The second installment of the Roomware project is this coming weekend. Join in!

            Less PDA more Smart Phone

            pda

Right now, smartphones are the new hotness and PDAs are old and busted. At least that’s what a new report from research firm Gartner says. During the first half of 2006, shipments of PDAs and smartphones grew 57 percent over the same period in 2005, totalling 42.1 million units. 34.7 million of those were smartphones, with the remainder PDAs.

If we don’t count the TomTom (navigational options) of PDA, would this be the trend?

I found a Dutch company, Icemobile, who does something quite similar as the previous mentioned Comvu services. Their website nicely illustrates the previous mentioned benefits of real time vlogging.

                    Real-time Mobile Vlogging

video callAllthough people roughly since 2004 can imitate CNN video reporters in Afghanistan with their videophone as citizen real-time tv-reporters, it isn’t happening. Already in 2000 this was noticed (in 2003 some initiatives) but now 2006 with barely 28% of video phone users, it hasn’t caught on very quick.

Yes Youtube is booming, yes complete films are made with mobiles, viewed and broadcasted. Still, mobile video reporting/vlogging is not adopted by the masses.

So what could change that? Here are some developments…

While in Finland complete cities skip landlines and go pure mobile, a new mobile wiki platform has launched, miki. Although I think eventually mobiles are going to be so powerful that they don’t care if something is built for mobiles or not it does amplify the focus on more publishing that is more mobile-minded.

Open Source phone has arrived ?

sigSIP has been around for a long time. Moreover, its a fundamental part in the 3G phone plans, which is all about using your phone more over the internet (which is much more than just website browsing). The good news is that with SIP your phone can become as open source and adjustable as the computer is at the moment and its becoming standard soon!

We found that the risk posed by these portable devices is higher than previously believed,” said Bill Strauss, who recently completed his Ph.D. in EPP at Carnegie Mellon. “These devices can disrupt normal operation of key cockpit instruments, especially Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, which are increasingly vital for safe landings.” Strauss is an expert in aircraft electromagnetic compatibility at the Naval Air Warfare Center in Patuxent River, Md.

Cell phones, using sophisticated translation technology, will translate the conversation in real time.

                                      iPods, mobile phones and community

IpodBarry Wellman Net Lab Director of the Centre for Urban & Community Studies of the University of Toronto was interviewed for a thoughtful long feature of Kenneth Kidd in Sunday’s Toronto Star about how iPods and mobile phones are affecting public/private boundaries of community.

So the whole notion of a strong, controlling neighbourhood community “has factually not been true” since at least the 1960s. What has replaced it — with the accelerating help of cellphones — is what Wellman calls “networked individualism.”

“The big change has been this shift from groups to networks,” he says. “They’re less formally structured, they’re more amorphous.”

Those in anyone’s network don’t have to be physically close, just a cell call away, and it’s easier to opt in or opt out of a network than it is a group
