Augusta National, which opened in December 1932 and did not have a black member until 1990, The club has a long tradition of not revealing its members. It also traditionally offered memberships to the chief executive of IBM, a sponsor of the Masters. After Virginia Rometty became IBM’s CEO in January, Augusta leaders found themselves in an awkward spot. In April, when Payne was peppered with media questions about the issue, he refused to answer, saying he would not publicly discuss membership issues. The club is believed to have a membership of about 300. So women now make up .6 percent of the total.

De man die afgelopen zondag de Masters heeft gewonnen, Bubba Watson, is een bijzonder persoon. Hij blijkt nog nooit een golfles te hebben gehad (naar eigen zeggen: ‘if you can’t beat me, how can you teach me’), heeft nog nooit alcohol gedronken of een boek gelezen. Verder zingt hij in een boyband.
Zijn filmpjes op Youtube zijn inmiddels legendarisch: hij mikt ballen vanuit de garage in zijn zwembad en test de hardheid van groenten met een driver.
