SAN FRANCISCO — Google and Verizon on Monday introduced a proposal for how Internet service should be regulated — and were immediately criticized by groups that favor keeping the network as open as possible.

Ivan Seidenberg, chief executive of Verizon, said the proposal excluded wireless because the companies were “concerned about the imposition of too many rules upfront that would not allow us to optimize this network in a fashion that would supercharge the growth we’ve seen in the past.”

But Gigi B. Sohn, president of Public Knowledge, a consumer group, said that by excluding wireless access, a fast-growing portion of Internet traffic, the proposal “sacrifices the future of the mobile wireless Internet as this platform becomes more central to the lives of all Americans.”

A record for the number of people riding a rollercoaster naked has been set in Essex, organisers have claimed. A total of 102 people met at Adventure Island in Southend to ride the Green Scream without clothes. The naked riders raised £22,000 for Southend Hospital’s breast care unit.

The Southend Hospital Charitable Foundation’s Bosom Pals Appeal aims to raise £750,000 to provide two digital mammography machines, as well as enhancements to the breast care unit’s current scanning machines.

For years, Internet advocates have warned of the doomsday scenario that will play out on Monday: Google and Verizon will announce a deal that the New York Times reports “could allow Verizon to speed some online content to Internet users more quickly if the content’s creators are willing to pay for the privilege.”

The deal marks the beginning of the end of the Internet as you know it. Since its beginnings, the Net was a level playing field that allowed all content to move at the same speed, whether it’s ABC News or your uncle’s video blog. That’s all about to change, and the result couldn’t be more bleak for the future of the Internet, for television, radio and independent voices.

The End of The Internet as We Know It

Monday the 9th of August 2010 will finally reveal if Google is Evil or not

Government departments will continue to use an outdated version of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer for browsing the web.

That’s because the cost of upgrading from IE6 would be too much of a burden on the taxpayer, the government has said in response to a recent petition.

Don’t think they have really factored in the potential costs of NOT ditching Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 (IE6). Creating and maintaining websites to cater for IE6 bugs is a big drain on web developers, and adds to their costs. In fact making a website work the same in IE6 is the biggest time and money waster of any project.

Governments should set Firefox as the new/future standard instead of any Internet Explorer version, much safer and less browser related bugs to fix. Moreover Microsoft hasn’t proved to be a great bug fixer in the past, their latest version IE8 is also littered with issue’s . [via]

The Concept

Because of the increased commercial interest of paving public space with digital advertising screens the need for an accessibel intervention devices seemed obvious and necessary. The wish and habit to comment (tag) the surrounding world is also an ancient and still vivant phenomena we try to preserve. Our concept of VR/Urban aims for claiming back urban space and and give the inhabitants a tool for occupiing urban screens. People shall not only remain as a passive audience, they must obtain the privilege and beside that the right tools to create their own multimedia content in the streets. The more and more mushrooming media facades, LED supplied walls and huge projections are interesting and worthy technical innovations for the people, but in contrast to the old fashioned posters in the streets, it is nearly impossible to create own content for these facades or even hang up your digital video.

According to this Elsevier-article of 2006 the level of PABO-students is not all that good: PABO-students from mbo are really bad: Almost 3/4 of them, doesn’t even reach the level of a smart 12-year old student.

If education at that age is that bad, no wonder that students score badly later.
